What To Expect On Your Initial Visit for a Snoring/Sleep Apnea Consultation

It is a good idea to be prepared before your appointment. You may keep a record of the number of hours that you usually sleep or your sleep pattern or if you usually experience night-time awakenings. List these down along with your other concerns relating to your health so that you can make the most of your doctor’s visit.

Meeting with the ENT Specialist

Sharing your problems candidly with your doctor is the start to a good doctor patient relationship. Your visit with an ENT Specialist should be a pleasant one and will usually begin by knowing your medical history or that of your family’s medical history, medications that you are taking, etc. Take note that quality care starts with good communication and a good ENT specialist will take time to listen and to explain different treatment options.

FAQ

Snoring is the noise that occurs during sleep when there is something obstructing the flow of air though the airways. When you breathe, the air squeezes past this obstruction, causing a whistling or rattling sound.

There are many different causes for snoring, and treatment needs to be specific to the cause and the particular patient. The particular part of the airway that commonly causes snoring is full of various anatomical parts. There is the tongue, the tonsils, the soft palate, the uvula and surrounding throat tissue and muscles. Obstructed nasal airways, adenoids or deformities of the nose could be causing the problem. For maximum benefit, it is vital to determine exactly which part or parts are causing the snoring. A detailed analysis by an ENT specialist is crucial.

While apnea is the non-breathing period that lasts more than 10 seconds, obstructive sleep apnea happens if there are more than 10 apnea episodes in an hour.

Chronic snoring usually gets worse over time and may lead to a disorder known as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where the obstruction is so severe that the airflow is greatly reduced. The heart and lung muscles must work harder to get enough oxygen. The lungs eventually become so tired that they have to “take a break”, and the sleeper effectively stops breathing for a short period of time.

Diagnosis can be made using information from a number of sources including the observations of patients, spouses and family members and physical examination of the nose, mouth, throat, palate and neck by the ENT specialist.

An additional option is for a polysomnogram (a sleep study) to be conducted. The patient may be admitted overnight into a "sleep centre" (available at a number of hospitals) or special arrangements can be made for the study to be done at home by a technician.

The consultation fee for the first visit starts from $150. Patients will be advised on the estimated bill and their average length of stay should any procedure be required.

We value your time so we strongly advice that you make an appointment with our staff. Our ENT specialist will just then meet you on the allocated time. Please call or email us for an appointment.
